Check your gas appliances
Take a moment to check that everything is working as it should, particularly as colder weather approaches and you start using your heating more.
Turn your heating on and make sure your boiler is running properly. If something doesn't seem right, report it and book a repair through myAccount.
You can also check your gas appliances for some common warning signs:
- Gas flames should be blue. A yellow or orange flame could be a warning sign.
- Look out for black staining or soot marks around gas appliances.
- Look out for excessive condensation around gas appliances.
- Keep air bricks, flues and vents clear of furniture, dust and debris.
It’s also a good idea to make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working and that you know where your gas meter is in case of an emergency.
If you notice something that doesn't seem right, book a repair through myAccount rather than waiting for your annual gas safety check.
Your annual gas safety check
When your annual gas safety check is due, we'll contact you to arrange an appointment.
Please make sure you're available to let the engineer into your home so we can carry out this important safety check.
Even if you don't have a gas supply or meter, we still need to visit as part of our legal responsibilities.
If you can't make your appointment, let us know as soon as possible so we can rearrange it and carry out your gas safety check before it's due.
If you believe you haven’t had a service before, please make sure to contact us on 0800 678 1221.
What to do if you smell gas
It’s important to know what to do if you smell gas or suspect a gas or carbon monoxide leak.
If you suspect a leak:
- Turn off any gas appliances.
- Open doors and windows.
- Leave your home immediately.
- Call the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Don't use a mobile phone or cordless phone inside your home. Only make calls once you're outside and away from the suspected leak.
If you have hearing difficulties, you can contact National Gas's textphone service on 0800 371 787.
Once you've spoken to the Gas Emergency Service, call us on 0800 678 1221.
If emergency services tell you to stay outside your home, don't go back in until it's safe to do so.
A few simple checks can help
Gas Safety Week is a good reminder to take a few minutes to check your heating and gas appliances, make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working and know what to do in an emergency.
If something doesn't seem right, if in doubt, raise a repair.
